Skysight Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 18, 2026

Skysight is an offline companion for looking up at the night sky. It carries its own star and planet catalog, works out what is above you from a rough region and the date, and lets you keep a private log of what you saw. This policy walks outward from your iPhone: first what never leaves it, then the one optional request that does.

At a glance

  • Skysight has no account, no sign-in and no server run by us that stores your observations.
  • Your sky log, notes, attached photos, settings and consent choices are kept on your iPhone. Skysight does not use iCloud sync.
  • Your location is rounded to whole degrees of latitude and longitude before the app uses it, and the precise coordinate is discarded.
  • Only if you turn on Use AI and choose Allow does Skysight send a question, together with catalog facts about the object you picked, to one AI provider, DeepSeek.
  • There are no ads, no analytics or attribution SDKs, no cross-app tracking and no in-app purchases. Skysight does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission.

The sky on your device

The catalog that powers the map, the Tonight list, object pages, Sources and stories is bundled inside the app. Positions of stars and planets are calculated on the iPhone from the catalog, the date you choose and your rounded region. None of this needs a network connection.

Your rounded region

When you allow location access, Skysight asks iOS for a coarse fix and immediately rounds it to whole degrees; the original coordinate is not stored. If you pick a region on the manual map instead, that rounded region is saved on the device so the sky looks right next time. Compass and motion readings are used live to point the map and are not recorded.

Your sky log

When you choose Save observation, Skysight stores the reviewed entry on the device: the object, the time, the catalog facts you confirmed and any personal note you wrote. Confirmed answers and feedback you gave about an object are kept so they can be reused for that same object. You can edit a note or delete an entry from the log at any time.

Photos you attach

You may attach one of your own photos to an observation. Skysight shows your recent images or the system photo picker, makes a copy of the photo you choose, and keeps that copy in its private, file-protected storage beside the entry. It is never uploaded and never sent to the AI provider. If the original is stored in iCloud Photos, iOS may download it from Apple so the copy can be made.

Small local records

Skysight also keeps a few preferences (for example whether you finished the first sky task and which sights have reminders) and a small diagnostic record of recent AI requests on the device. That diagnostic record holds at most 24 recent events, leaves out credentials, location, camera, audio and your notes, is excluded from device backups, and is never uploaded. A service credential that lets the app reach the AI provider is kept in the iOS Keychain; it belongs to the app and does not identify you.

Permissions, one by one

| Permission | When Skysight asks | What happens with it | | --- | --- | --- | | Location (While Using) | When you open the sky map | A coarse fix rounded to whole degrees aligns the sky; a manual region always works instead | | Camera | Only when you choose AR | A live preview sits behind the sky overlay; nothing is captured, saved or uploaded | | Photos | When you attach a photo to an observation | You choose an image; a copy is kept with that log entry on the device | | Photos (add only) | When you save an observation card | A rendered card image is added to your Photos library | | Microphone and Speech Recognition | Only when you start voice input | Your words are transcribed on the device into the question field for you to review; audio is not stored or sent | | Notifications | When you tap Remind me on a sight | A local reminder is scheduled for that viewing window and stays on the device |

Every permission is optional. If you decline one, the related feature is unavailable and the map, catalog facts, keyboard and sky log keep working. You can change any of these choices in the iOS Settings app.

Purchases and Apple services

Skysight is free. It has no subscriptions, in-app purchases or paid content, and it does not process payments. Apple handles the App Store download under its own terms and privacy policy.

The one request that leaves your iPhone

Skysight can answer a question about an object by asking an AI service to choose matching facts from the bundled catalog. This is off until you turn on Use AI and choose Allow on the consent screen.

What is sent, and only after you allow it: the chosen object's name and ID, its catalog facts, the catalog version, the question you typed or dictated, the facts you already confirmed for that object, your feedback preferences for it, earlier confirmed questions about it, and a random request ID.

What is never added: your location, observation dates, personal notes, attached photos, camera images, audio, device identifiers or the rest of your log.

Who receives it: the request goes directly over an encrypted connection to DeepSeek (Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd.). There is no relay operated by us. Like any internet service, DeepSeek can see the IP address of the connection. DeepSeek processes the request on its servers under its own privacy policy, which Skysight links from the Receiving-service policy page. We cannot promise how long DeepSeek keeps request data.

Skysight uses the reply only to pick facts that already exist in the catalog; free-form AI text is not shown or read aloud. Please do not type names, addresses or other personal details into a question, because the text you send is what DeepSeek receives.

Changing your mind: turn off Use AI for stories in Settings. That withdraws consent, cancels a request in progress and discards any late reply. Turning it on again asks for consent before anything else is sent. Withdrawing stops future sharing; it cannot recall a request DeepSeek has already received.

Tracking, analytics and advertising

Skysight does not show advertising, sell data, build advertising profiles or track you across other companies' apps and websites. It contains no analytics, attribution or advertising SDKs. Sharing a log summary or an observation card happens only when you tap Share and pick a destination yourself.

How long things last and how to remove them

  • Log entries, notes and attached photo copies stay until you delete the entry or remove the app.
  • Deleting an entry asks for confirmation and removes it from the device.
  • Reminders can be cancelled from the sight; iOS removes delivered ones as usual.
  • Cards you saved to Photos and summaries you shared are managed in those destinations.
  • Uninstalling Skysight removes all of its local data from the iPhone. Because there is no account or cloud copy, we cannot restore it afterwards.

Local files are protected by iOS data protection and the app's sandbox. No method of storage is perfectly secure, so keep your device passcode enabled.

Changes to this policy

If Skysight starts collecting different information or sending data somewhere new, we will update this page and its effective date before that version is released.
